BOOK LOOKS

Haus Helga was drawn by Katharina Immekus and released by Lubok.  The book contains simple drawings of houses.  It is mimeographed (there is a nice effect caused by the thickness of the paper and the printing process—often images on one page bleed through to the next and things overlap in interesting ways), staple bound and produced in an edition of 57.  

Teenage Kissers is a photography book by Ed Templeton.  The book has black and white and color photographs (a couple of them have been painted on by the artist).  Templeton made Teenage Smokers in 1999 with Alleged (I think there were one or two smaller zine editions that Alleged released before the one produced in the edition of 2,000).  This book is produced in an edition of 1,000 and was published by Seems books.  The book was made to coincide with the exhibition Teenage Kissers at the Half Gallery in the Summer of 2011.  It is perfect bound and each book in the edition comes with a newsprint poster signed by Templeton.  

La Belle Dame Sans Merci is a large scale cloth bound hardcover book by Alec Soth.  It was produced in an edition of 500.  There are 250 in Italian and 250 in English.  The book was published by Punctum Press is 2011.  There are a couple available right here (but I think not too many—and for not too long).  The book is 52 pages and is 12”x15.25”.  I turn the pages slowly and carefully when I look through this book.  

Two By Two: Growth in Arithmetic, Discovery Edition was released in 1957 (this edition from 1962) by Harcourt, Brace & World, Inc.  It is 160 pages of math practice.  The book was made by John R. Clark, CHarlotte W. Junge and Caroline Hatton Clark with illustrations by Betty Alden, Ruth Ruhman, Frank Schwarz, Charles Dougherty and other Delos D. Rowe associates.  The book is staple bound with color illustrations throughout.

Victory Over Darkness by Peter Sutherland was made to accompany Sutherland’s exhibition at the Half Gallery from September 17 to October 15, 2011.  The book is on a thin paper, printed one side, color, and staple bound.  

Time is Rhythm is a book of photographs by Ted Pushinsky.  It was published by Hamburger Eyes in 2010 in an edition of 100.  The black and white photographs were taken during the summer of 1977 on a trip from San Francisco to Northern Europe.  

This book was made to accompany an exhibition of new work by Tom Friedman at the Stephen Friedman Gallery in London.  The exhibition took place in early 2002.  The design of the book was done by the artist.  The book is staple bound and is printed on a heavy glossy stock.  It is color throughout.

Untitled book by Chris Johanson and Johanna Jackson.  The interior pages are letterpressed and are hand watercolored. Bound in a dark green file folder stamped with the artists’ names.  Produced in an editon of 31.  The book was printed by Lark Press and released by Publication Studio in Portland, Oregon.

The History of Photography in Pen & Ink (abridged study guide) by Charles Woodard was made in 2009 by A-Jump Books (They are also responsible for the design).  The book is perfect bound and limited to 500 copies.  The cover is printed one color red on a gray stock and the interior is black and white on an off white paper.  Drawings are printed on the right and their titles are on the left.  It can be used as a study guide (Which is what I think these drawing’s original purpose was) or can just be enjoyed (less pressure).  The size of the book is small and nice (almost like notecards).   

Galactikrap 2 By Brian Chippendale.  Covers, inside covers, and additional front and back page are all silkscreened.  Interiors are black and white photocopy.  Book is a comic and is over 70 pages (thick!).  Also included is two one page comics by Ben Jones (I think).  The book is staple bound.  It was made in 2007 in Providence, Rhode Island.

Dysfunctional is a book produced to accompany an exhibition of work at the Blue Note Gallery in London.  The exhibition took place in 1995.  Artists and writers featured in the exhibition (with work in the book) include Ed Templeton, Mark Gonzalez, Barry McGee, Thomas Campbell, Earl Parker, Tobin Yelland, Lizzie Finn, Andy Jenkins, Phil Frost, Ari Marcopoulos, James Jarvis, Mike Mills, and a bunch of others.  It is staple bound with cardstock cover and black and white interiors.

Dana Schutz book made to accompany her exhibition “Tourette’s Paintings” at the Douglas Hyde Gallery in late summer of 2010.  A small, thin and simple clothbound hardcover book.  The book includes paintings by Schutz as well as a text she wrote titled, “Stranger Things.”  Copies are available in the Dougles Hyde Gallery Bookshop.

Drawings from the film Beginners by Mike Mills is a hard bound drawing book that is broken up into three sections: The History of Sadness, Scenes from 1955, and The History of Love.  The book includes drawings that Mills made, that were used in his new film Beginners as works that were made by the main character Oliver.  The drawings included are personal to Mills, he explains a bit in the introduction, and he presents them in a creative and beautiful way.  The drawings usually include a text explaining a bit about their origins or just describing what they are.  The book is black and white except for yellow covers and endpapers.  It was published by Damiani in March of 2011.
