#58 THE WRONG BOX
The Wrong Box is a large book of paintings by Gary Panter. The paintings are reproduced nicely on a thick stock. The design of the book is kept pretty simple, printing the paintings full bleed on the large pages with only minimal information about the book on the first page close to the spine. They are available from Picturebox or right here (if you are in Europe). The book is 32 pages, staple bound, and produced in an edition of 1000.
#57 HAUS HELGA
Haus Helga was drawn by Katharina Immekus and released by Lubok. The book contains simple drawings of houses. It is mimeographed (there is a nice effect caused by the thickness of the paper and the printing process—often images on one page bleed through to the next and things overlap in interesting ways), staple bound and produced in an edition of 57.
#56 TEENAGE KISSERS
Teenage Kissers is a photography book by Ed Templeton. The book has black and white and color photographs (a couple of them have been painted on by the artist). Templeton made Teenage Smokers in 1999 with Alleged (I think there were one or two smaller zine editions that Alleged released before the one produced in the edition of 2,000). This book is produced in an edition of 1,000 and was published by Seems books. The book was made to coincide with the exhibition Teenage Kissers at the Half Gallery in the Summer of 2011. It is perfect bound and each book in the edition comes with a newsprint poster signed by Templeton.
#55 LA BELLE DAME SANS MERCI
La Belle Dame Sans Merci is a large scale cloth bound hardcover book by Alec Soth. It was produced in an edition of 500. There are 250 in Italian and 250 in English. The book was published by Punctum Press is 2011. There are a couple available right here (but I think not too many—and for not too long). The book is 52 pages and is 12”x15.25”. I turn the pages slowly and carefully when I look through this book.
#54 ANIMALS THAT SAW ME
Animals That Saw Me was made in 2011 by Ed Panar. It was produced by The Ice Plant. The idea, design, layout, printing and photographs are simple and beautiful.
#53 GIVING IN TO LIVE THE EXPERIENCE
Giving in to Live the Experience is a large-scale staple bound book by Paul Wackers. It was released by Seems in 2009 in a limited edition of 500. The book was made to accompany Wackers exhibition at The Luggage Store in San Francisco in the Summer of 2009. The book is printed on a matte paper and includes color paintings and black and white drawings. There is also a two page spread of (I think, found) photographs that look like they may be inspiration for some of the artist’s work. The book is about 9.5”x12.5”. The simple design of the book and the (sometimes) intricate drawings and paintings work well together.
#52 MY PLAY-STATION AT THE SERPENTINE 2005
My Play-Station at the Serpentine 2005 is a perfect bound exhibition book for the artist Tomoko Takahashi. The book contains installation views from the show as stapled in color plates followed by complete inventories for the images from the installation.
#51 TWO BY TWO
Two By Two: Growth in Arithmetic, Discovery Edition was released in 1957 (this edition from 1962) by Harcourt, Brace & World, Inc. It is 160 pages of math practice. The book was made by John R. Clark, CHarlotte W. Junge and Caroline Hatton Clark with illustrations by Betty Alden, Ruth Ruhman, Frank Schwarz, Charles Dougherty and other Delos D. Rowe associates. The book is staple bound with color illustrations throughout.
#50 HELLO WORLD
Hello World: A Life in Ham Radio was made by Danny Gregory and Paul Sahre. It is beautiful, well put together, and educational. The book follows the Ham career of Jerry Powell. The readers find out about Powell and his adventures mostly through his collection of QSL cards, which are the calling card of ham operators around the world. The book was released by Princeton Architectural Press in 2003. It has 256 interior color pages, a spot varnish on the cover, and a rainbow gradation behind a ham glossary on the inside front cover.
#49 VICTORY OVER DARKNESS
Victory Over Darkness by Peter Sutherland was made to accompany Sutherland’s exhibition at the Half Gallery from September 17 to October 15, 2011. The book is on a thin paper, printed one side, color, and staple bound.
